Why I Love Grace!
The following write-up is by one of our Freshmen students, Rachel Oehlerking.
This past year God has been teaching me about GRACE--receiving things that I don’t deserve. Every good gift I am given is the result of grace! When I mess up the Lord ought to punish me, but His grace picks me up and brushes me off. I grew up in a loving home, but somewhere between the Ten Commandments and some legalistic sermons I missed the point of grace. I learned to live in judgment and fear. I started to believe that my worth was defined by my performance. As a Christian, I saw myself as a wretched sinner constantly under condemnation, and felt as though I could not repent enough. Because I continued to fall into the same patterns, I thought even my repentance wasn't sufficient. People praised me and complimented me, but even this didn't bring me relief. I had come to believe that my worth centered on my good behavior. Deep down I concluded that I was never good enough and that the God I serve requires the highest perfection, I felt like a disgusting wretch. At times, I still find it difficult to accept the fact that God is not upset with me. It feels odd that a holy God is not disappointed with my unbelief. Sometimes I feel as though He will just give up. However, that is not what grace means. Despite all my thoughts, His quiet, still answer always seems to be, “Because I want you to know that I love you just the way you are.” It is His grace that sustains me and gently shows me His love over and over again, even when I don’t deserve it.
