The following write-up is by Emma Deforest. It was an assignment for her English course this past school year:
Since coming to Eston and earnestly seeking the Lord, He has been showing me the importance of the Bible, specifically the Old Testament. Though I can never do more than scratch the surface of who He is, reading the Bible gives me a more complete picture of God For every step I have taken in my faith, God has given back to me tenfold.
The moment I started seeking, the Lord granted me astonishing wisdom and discernment in understanding Scriptures. God gave me revelation while reading Genesis 40:9-19 where Joseph interprets the dreams of the cup-bearer and the baker, after they in turn say, “I took a cluster of grapes and squeezed the juice into the cup. Then I placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.... There were three baskets of white pastries stacked on my head... for Pharaoh, but the birds came and ate them from the basket.”1 blood, and in the sacrifice of the body. God gave me this connection to the Last Supper, even though this would not take place for hundreds of years from my viewpoint in Genesis.
Again I sought God in His Word, and was rewarded as I read Exodus 20:25. “If you use stones to build my altar, use only natural, uncut stones. Do not shape the stones with a tool, for that would make the altar unfit for holy use.” This spoke to me of how essential Christ is in every action of every day. If I try to do anything by my own strength, if I shape the rock, it is unacceptable for God. Only by surrendering to Jesus can I bring any glory to God.
Starting to comprehend the importance of God’s Word, I read more, and the Lord reinforced this impression of the Bible’s worth in Deuteronomy 6:20-24: In the future your children will ask you, ‘What is the meaning of these laws, decrees, and regulations that the Lord our God has commanded us to obey?’ Then you must tell them . . . the Lord our God commanded us to obey . . . so he can continue to bless us and preserve our lives. In these dreams I saw Christ foreshadowed in the atoning qualities of the 1 All Scripture verses are from the New Living Translation. I felt God telling me I am on the right track. To seek to know God’s Word is a worthy goal. God did a miraculous work in bringing together and preserving a written compilation of His Word; He caused me to appreciate anew the fact that the Bible exists and is freely available to me.
Recently God has spoken to me in Psalm 91:14 where “The Lord says, ‘I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name.’” To comprehend that the Creator of everything loves me is nearly impossible. I have a very hard time trusting anybody, but I am learning to trust in God. I am so blessed to be a child of the Father who possesses enough patience to deal with the doubts that I encounter in my spiritual journey.
God has given me more revelation than I could have hoped for, and I look forward to going deeper in my understanding of Him through His Word.
