Introducing Our New Program - Tech Discipleship
At Eston College, we get excited when young people choose to use their gifts for God's glory. In September Nathan Tymos, a BCIT graduate, arrived on campus to complete a bi-vocational degree in Biblical Studies. Wanting to combine his computer expertise and his Christian call, Nathan began looking for ways to improve the college. One of the first things he did was to upgrade the college’s computer system. A second was to create an accredited IT program (Tech Discipleship) that caters to young people desiring to sharpen their computer skills and grow in their relationship with Christ.
The purpose of Tech Discipleship is to teach students how to best leverage technology for the work of the Kingdom. Those enrolled in this program will learn how to combine technical skills with their passion for Christ so that they can make an eternal difference in the world. Currently, this is a one year program which combines four technology classes with six Biblical Studies classes. Students will have the option of specializing in network administration or computer programming. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Certificate of Technology and Discipleship from Eston College which gives them a competitive edge in the IT field. It also better equips those pursuing more advanced IT training. Additionally, those who choose to write the Microsoft exam and are successful become highly attractive to potential employers.
Churches that send a student for enrollment in this program will receive 10 free hours of IT support for each semester the student attends. Why this incentive? First, we want to make certain your student becomes more comfortable and capable supporting your church's technical needs. Second, we believe that if these disciples of Christ fully develop their skills and abilities, they have the potential to take the gospel to even more places where it is needed. Our desire is to help students grow in their love for the local church and we are convinced this will happen when students begin to see how their contribution powerfully influences the world around them. We have space for twelve students in this program. If you are interested, please write us with any questions, or start the application process by email here. The following poem written by Esther Vandergaast was included in a paper for her Discipleship class.
Father, here I stand
As Your slave I choose to do Your will Not my own I choose to love the children Just as You have shown I choose to make myself as nothing Because You are my everything I choose to love You always In good times and in bad I choose to obey Your commands And put others above myself I choose to open my hands And let You control my money I choose to live in fellowship Even when I’d rather be alone Lord, I declare my choice I accept Your grace I now stand By Your grace and strength alone A righteous disciple of Christ. |
Rocket to 30: A Graduation Charge
Check our our latest podcast episode: "Slow Today, Fast Tomorrow". This episode features a sermon delivered at graduation. It is an incredibly powerful message and we highly recommend you listen to it! The person who spoke is a young man of God with a remarkable ability to convey truth. In this sermon he clearly elucidates our desperate need to act on what we hear. You can find Eston College's podcast through iTunes or you can subscribe using your favorite podcasting program. Alternately, you may also listen through a web browser.
A Tribute to Wayne and Darla Lowenberg
In Philippians 2:17, Paul compares his life to a “drink offering being poured out” on the Philippians’ faith. All who know Wayne and Darla, know the same could be said of them. They are an incredible couple who have joyfully served both Christ and Eston College at much personal cost to themselves, and well beyond the normal retirement age.
The Lowenbergs served a number of years as missionaries in Taiwan and in the pastorate in Canada before moving to Eston in 1979. At Eston College, Wayne’s first position was as a teacher where he brought great passion to such classes as Introduction to Missions and Old Testament Survey. Students loved Wayne’s attitude and joyful spirit. One student recalls that at the start of each class, Wayne would stick a finger in the air, run across the classroom, and then launch an imaginary football half-way across Eston--touchdown! Another remembers how easy it was to get him off track, especially when encouraged to tell stories from the mission field. (Do pigs and a motorbike ring a bell?) Still, he was never distracted from his main goal which was to equip students for cross-cultural ministry. Wayne was famous for organizing a fantastic Missions Conference. Even today, many students report their love for missions because of his influence. A few years ago, Wayne transitioned from teaching to serving as the Plant Manager where his responsibilities included maintaining the college’s buildings and vehicles. Although Wayne did his job with excellence, he could often be overheard saying that he felt like he was making “bricks without straw!” This, of course, was in jest! It should be noted that Wayne was great at making his budget stretch farther than anyone could possibly imagine. Click here to read the rest... Alumni News
